View Full Version : Apexi DECS EL tach install

One thing I DID find out at my last Dyno day, was that the stock tach on my Spec was not all that true. Dont know if this is common on all Specs, but at redline ( or what I thought was redline ) the Dyno showed me doing aprox. 300 RPM LESS than my tach. This sounds plausable as I'm sure Nissan would like to discourage shifts near the "limit" due to liablility in the first 3 years.
That said, I have been looking at upgrading or replacing my stock tach with the unit from Apexi shown above. Preferably, I would like to keep the stock one in its place and mount the Apexi somewhere decent. Whats involved in wiring this thing up? I know Clayton's the man on electrical, but if anyone has any thoughts and or ideas on this I would appreciate them. I'm sure the install would be the same for almost any tach, not just the Apexi.
Thanks in advance.

it is basic wiring. Shouldn't be too hard. I know that in the instructions in order to get an RPM signal it will tell you to tap one of the wires on the coil pack on top of the plugs. I see you have an 04, and to avoid any kind of confusion with the coil packs, you can simply take off your ecu connector shroud to expose the pin holes and put a pin in #103. I have a diagram if you need the pin out diagram to find #103.
But that should be the hardest part. I wouldn't mind hookin it up for you if you need some help.

^^what he said.
the 04+s don't have a visible tach wire. so you would have to go to the coil packs or tap into pin 103.
but honestly, i would suggest just saving up and picking up an SAFC2 ;)

Yea, I'm saving for the safc2, just liked the looks of that tach. Hopefuly, I'll have it well before the next Dynoday meet and be able to work on some issues then. BTW...I have found the SAFC2 for $225.00 on Ebay, but the shipping is a ridiculous $35.00!! Would you folks consider this a fair price ncluding shipping? Or is there a better place localy? Again, thanks for the help.

if it is new, then that is right about normal for price.
HPAutoworks has them for $275/free shipping
SCO has them for $339.97
Apex Motorsports has them for $299.99
So again, if the SAFC-II is new on Ebay for that price, you can save yourself $15, but I would rather buy from a vendor like HPautoworks, cause you KNOW it is brand new and not missing any parts

Yea. He's great. But life's about priority's. If I did'nt have hospital bills, diapers, clothes etc...I would already have my STI  , but I wouldnt trade him for anything. :D
